DIY Preakness Party Ideas and Decorations
Preakness is this Saturday May 21 so I thought it would be fun to show how to make festive Preakness party ideas and decorations. Here is a TV segment I did a few years ago at WBAL-NBC affiliate sharing my ideas on how to throw a fun Preakness party.
I had so much fun when I was there. Everyone was in full Preakness spirit wearing their pretty floral dresses, Preakness Hats and Fascinators. Here are the projects I showed and some of them can be made with things you may already have around your house!

DIY Preakness Party Ideas and Decorations
DIY Black-Eyed Susan Flowers
It is difficult to find fabric Black-Eyed Susans in the craft stores so I decided to create my own. These are made from plastic water bottles. I also printed out the Maryland flag and attached it to the front of a vase using double-sided tape. Here is my video on how to make water bottle flowers.
DIY Preakness Party Sign
It is always fun to have a festive sign for the occasion. I created this Preakness party sign from cardboard, chalkboard paper and wood scrapbooking paper. T learn how to easily make a bistro-style chalkboard, check out this video I made showing how – DIY Bistro Style Chalkboard
DIY Preakness Trophy
I made this Preakness trophy using things I already had – an old bottle, craft foam, ribbon, rocking horse accents, 3D fabric paint and silver spray paint. This is what it looked like before I painted it. It didn’t matter if everything was not silver, I used different ribbons for the texture. Once I painted it, you couldn’t tell that the ribbons were brown.
DIY Preakness Gift Bags Party Favors
You can’t have a Preakness party without a lucky horseshoe. I made this horseshoe gift bag from craft foam and attached the horseshoe to a close pin to secure the bag. This is what it looked like before I painted it and added black-eyed Susans.
DIY Triple Crown Preakness Stakes
Since the Preakness is the second jewel in the triple crown, I decided to make one. I used craft foam, gems and 3D fabric paint. I also made the black-eyed Susan blanket from dollar store yellow flowers and glued pom poms to the center to make them look like black-eyed Susans. This is the crown in its early stages of development.
DIY Black-Eyed Susan Party Plates
Here is an easy way to dress up your party and be fun Black-Eyed Susan plates to server Preakness food. Cut the edges of a large yellow plate to look like petals and attach a smaller black plate on top with double-stick tape. Voila…you have a simple, easy to make black-eyed Susan party plate.
