Oscar Worthy Popcorn
I find it very comforting to be eating a bowl of popcorn while watching a good movie. Although I love the taste and crunch of popcorn, I am not a big fan of soggy, greasy kernels smothered in an artificial butter flavoring. Â It starts to make me feel sick after a while and for some reason I still keep eating it. I guess because it is my natural tendency to want to eat while I am engaged in a movie. In honor of the Oscars, I decided to make my own version of popcorn that will not only make my mouth but also my tummy happy. I experimented with a few techniques and decided on this one. I popped the corn in the microwave in a brown paper bag. I was amazed at how fluffy and fresh it was as opposed to prepackaged microwave bags of popcorn. I then drizzled it with olive oil, salt and freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano. It is not only delicious but also a healthier alternative.
Here is my recipe for olive oil, Parmesan popcorn.
Ingredients
- Brown Paper Bag (lunch bag)
- 1/4 Cup Popcorn Kernels
- 3 teaspoons (1Tablespoon) Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- Sea Salt
- Freshly Grated Parmigiano-Reggiano
Directions
Measure a 1/4 cup of popcorn kernels and pour them into a brown paper bag.
Fold the top of the bag over twice and place folded side down inside the microwave. Cook for 3 minutes or until popping slows to about 5 seconds between pops.
Pour the popped corn into a bowl, discarding all of the unpopped kernels.
Drizzle the popcorn with 3 teaspoons (1 Tablespoon) of olive oil. Add 1 teaspoon at a time and stir after each addition to coat all of the popcorn.
Grate fresh Parmesiano-Reggiano over the popcorn and mix well.
Sprinkle popcorn with sea salt to taste. The cheese will add some salt flavor to the popcorn so only add a little salt at a time until it is has the desired flavor.
You can also add fresh cracked pepper, garlic powder or any other flavors you want to try. The olive oil will allow the seasonings to stick to the popcorn. Be creative and come up with your own take on this traditional movie treat. Enjoy!
