The Secret to Making Chocolate Covered Strawberry Footballs
Learn the secret to easily make chocolate covered strawberry footballs for your Super Bowl party. It is always a fun idea to have edible decorations for your football party food. These strawberries made to look like mini footballs not only look festive but they are delicious! These little guys will be a welcome addition to your Super Bowl Party and a great conversation piece. They are so easy to make and can be prepared well before the pregame festivities. Don’t expect any turnovers or fumbles with these yummy strawberry footballs only touchdowns!
I have made these strawberry footballs for many of my DIY Football Themed TV segments on different network affiliates. I needed to perfect my recipe so I could make them the night before and they would still be beautiful and delicious for my TV segment.
Here is the method I use to make my chocolate covered strawberry footballs that works every time. I pick beautiful strawberries that are ripe and firm but not overly ripe. I make sure the stem is fresh and green to act as if they are on the football field. I like to choose strawberries that are large, about the same size and have a football shape. I make sure to thoroughly wash and dry them. I also let them sit out until they are room temperature. The melted chocolate coats them more evenly if the strawberries are not wet or cold.
I like to use good quality dark chocolate bars. I never had success with chocolate chips because when I tried to melt them, they didn’t melt evenly and the chocolate came out lumpy. I like a smooth, creamy melted chocolate that is easy to dip the strawberries into. I also like to melt white chocolate to make the laces. I put the strawberries on skewers so they are easy to dip into the melted chocolate and make a beautiful presentation displayed on football field skewer holder.
I have always enjoyed hosting football parties. The playoffs and Super Bowl are some of the most fun parties to throw because there are so many DIY football-themed decorations that can be made to add a festive touch to the event. I love to make my football party food to either look like footballs or be served in DIY football party platters like my DIY Paper Towel Roll NFL Uprights or my DIY Yard Marker Serving Tray.

How to Make Chocolate Covered Strawberry Footballs
- Wash and dry the strawberries bring to room temperature if they were refrigerated.
- Push the skewers into the stem side of the strawberries.
- Break up the chocolate bar into smaller pieces and place in a microwave safe glass bowl.
- Heat the chocolate in the microwave on 50% power in the glass bowl for 30 seconds and stir. Repeat until the chocolate fully is melted but don’t overheat.
- Let the melted chocolate cool slightly until it is no longer hot.
- While holding the skewer, dip the end of a strawberry into the chocolate, turning the skewer so the strawberry is coated on all sides.
- Push the dipped strawberry skewer into the Styrofoam block repeating with the remaining strawberries.
- Refrigerate the chocolate covered strawberries for 30 minutes to harden
- Once the chocolate has hardened draw on the laces.
- If using white chocolate, melt it in the microwave in a glass bowl at 50% power for 30 seconds at a time until melted. When cool, spoon the white chocolate into an icing bag fitted with a thin tip (I used a #3 decorator tip).
- If using icing, also use an icing bag or icing tube fitted with a small tip.
- Place the decorated strawberry skewers into a Styrofoam block and put them back into the refrigerator to harden. These can be made ahead of time and kept in the refrigerator until ready to serve.
How to Make the Football Field Skewer Holder
- To make the football field stand, paint the top of the Styrofoam block green with a foam brush and let dry.
- Cut strips of the green foam sheet the size to fit all sides of the Styrofoam.
- Using a white marker and a ruler, draw the lines for the field.
Draw lines for the yards on the craft foam as shown above and write the yards numbers freehand.
- Attach the foam strips to the Styrofoam with craft glue.
- Place your strawberry footballs in the decorated football field skewer holder for when they are ready to be served. Enjoy!
