DIY Emerald City (Wizard of Oz Decorations)
Learn how to make my version of the DIY Emerald City inspired by the movie The Wizard of Oz. This design uses things you probably already have around your house! The towers are made from paper tubes and water bottles and the base and rainbow are made from cardboard and foam board. This decoration would look great for a Wizard of Oz themed birthday party, for a Wizard of Oz Trunk or Treat or a St. Patrick’s Day celebration.

When I was asked by several TV stations to create a DIY St. Patrick’s Day decorations and crafts TV segment, I wanted to design an nontraditional, St. Patrick’s decoration for my show stopper. I like to come up with something unexpected created from reused and unconventional items. It occurred to me that that the magnificent Emerald City from The Wizard of Oz would be a perfect DIY St. Patrick’s Day decoration. It is a magical green, sparkling iconic structure that is unmistakable. Add LED lights to make it glow for a beautiful decoration.

How to Make Emerald City
- Line up 5 different length tubes to make the back part of the Emerald City.
- Draw a rounded top of the paper tube on one side and a flat side on the other side of the top of the tube.
- Cut the tube so the top looks like the tube shown above.
- Cut a piece of cardboard to make the base of the Emerald City.
- Hot glue the 5 different length tubes to the cardboard base.
- Cut 8 paper tubes to smaller lengths for the second row of the Emerald City. The tubes should be different lengths.
- Cut the tops off of 4 empty water bottles and cut them to different lengths.
- Glue them together with a hot glue gun so they become one unit.
- Glue the second layer of the tubes to the cardboard base with a hot glue gun. Do not glue the water bottles because they need to be removed to place lights inside of them.
- Paint the city green and make a rainbow out of cardboard or foam board.
- Brush the towers with white glue and sprinkle with green glitter. Glue sequins onto the towers for extra shine.
- Glue moss to the base.
- Create a yellow brick road from craft foam and a brown marker. Click here to watch how the Yellow Brick Road is made.
- Glue flowers and shiny leaves to the base on top of the moss and place lights under each of the water bottles to make the Emerald City come alive.
